Who We Are

Waverly Road Child Care Center has been in operation since 1952. We are a mission of Waverly Road Presbyterian Church. We are a relatively small center (our capacity is around 60 kids total though we only accept around 40), which allows for a more individualized approach to education. We currently care for children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. We DO NOT offer drop-in or part-time care.

We follow the creative curriculum which leads to many child-led activities throughout the day. Above all, we strive to nurture and educate while maintaining a fun, creative atmosphere. One of our other major focuses at WRCCC is on family values, which you can see in action during our family-style meal-times or on our neighborhood walks.

Additionally, some of our staff members have been here 40+ years! Our teachers are well-versed in child development, and there is a sense of continuity of care as children progress through the classrooms. It is common for our teachers to be familiar with all the children in the center, meaning that by the time a child “moves up” to the next room, the transition is usually very smooth.

Our Philosophy

  • We believe that every child is of immense value regardless of color, culture, creed, or ability. Every child’s uniqueness will be encouraged and celebrated.

  • We believe that each child is unique, and we will encourage each child to develop to their highest potential.

  • We believe children are inherently creative and should be granted the freedom to experiment and develop that creativity.

  • We believe that each child is eager to learn and explore the world.

  • We believe that each child can develop the self-discipline and sufficiency needed to cooperate and work effectively in a group setting.

  • We believe children have the innate capacity to be thoughtful, kind, and loving. Their sensitivity to other’s feelings can be nurtured by both parents and teachers who are also thoughtful, loving, and kind.

  • We believe that children grow through success, and we will structure the program in such a way that each child will experience the excitement of success often. Additionally, we believe that the self-confidence that children achieve through success will enable them to enter the elementary school system with eagerness and the ability to relate to both children and adults in such a way that learning will be greatly enhanced.

  • We believe that the job of teaching reading and elementary math belongs rightfully to the elementary school educators. Our job is to let the child experience the joys of learning so that they will be eager to enter the more structured world of learning in the public (or private) school setting.

Our Goals

  • To respect, accept, and respond to each individual child’s feeling in order to promote a positive self-concept, which in turn sparks a natural love for learning in each child.

  • To recognize that each child and their family are uniquely different due to cultural and background experiences; to acknowledge, value, and celebrate various cultural and ethnic differences; to implement a curriculum which promotes the acceptance of other people and cultures.

  • To determine what basic needs must be addressed prior to offering the opportunity for successful learning experiences.

  • To arrange the environment in such a way that encourages exploration and discovery so that children can expand their world at their own pace; to select materials and equipment that are developmentally appropriate for each age group; to design each classroom to provide an environment that is clean, safe, and stimulates a desire to actively participate in the learning process.

  • To promote children to the next class level based on individual development, age, and available space
